A barcode consists of a series of bars and spaces. Each space represents a single character while each bar represents a group of characters. The length of a barcode determines how much information it contains. Short codes only hold about 20-30 characters while long codes can hold thousands of characters. The code is the part of the barcode that identifies the product. It is generally printed directly onto the packaging of the product. The code is often referred to as the “product code” or “item number”. The symbology is the part of the code that encodes the data. Symbols are represented using either black or white bars. Black bars represent a logical 0 and white bars represent a logical 1. The symbology is used to encode the item number, manufacturer, date, lot numbers, expiration dates, and any other identifying information.
